| The AAFP again supported a rural presentation at the NCFPR-NCSM
Annual Meeting in Kansas City. The STFM Group coordinated this presentation. The two
sessions were attended by 115 students and residents. This is the only chance for many to
explore a rural career. Dr. Bob Boyer again presented the body of the session, followed by
small group sessions to help students and residents with career questions about rural
lifestyle, choosing a rural-oriented residency, using residencies to prepare for rural
practice, and choosing a rural practice site. Dr. Boyer continues to give an outstanding presentation. Not only has he presented in Kansas City, he has been to Ohio, South Carolina, and Nebraska. He is a gifted storyteller and the stories illustrate the challenges and rewards of rural practice. Our thanks to him. We also have a video of his presentation. If you need a great speaker for your family practice or rural group, please contact Dr. Boyer at 1010 N Kansas, Wichita, KS 67214-3199, (316) 261-2649. rboyer@websurf.net. Please call if you would like to help with year 2000 at KC! or contact rcbowman@atsu.edu Past students and residents have also held working group sessions on rural health and developed resolutions to address the problem of RRC restrictions on rural training, graduate medical education funding, and the need for a specific person at AAFP whose primary job involves rural health. |
