Rural Women Physicians Less Satisfied Study Shows

A study published in the March 10th edition of Canadian Family Physician indicates that rural women physicians have a broad and varied medical practice but are less satisfied both personally and professionally than their urban counterparts, and may indicate why women are under-represented in the field.

The study, entitled "Women Rural Physicians: Are they Unique?" was conducted by Dr. Filomena Incitti in 1999-2000 as part of her residency training in the Rural Family Medicine Program at The University of Western Ontario. It is the first Canadian study to examine the issue of recruiting and retaining rural doctors from a gender perspective.
